總能聽到一個熟悉

但又不是那麽熟悉的短語：

on the side

 

那麽它到底是啥意思呢？

 總不能是 “兼職” 或 “秘密地” 吧？

這顯然和吃飯不搭邊啊！

“on the side”在點(diǎn)餐時怎麽(me)理解？

 

其實，on the side 主要在美式英語的點餐場景中使用，有兩種常見意思：

 

① 把...作爲配菜
當你想要在主菜之外再加一份配菜時使用。

 

🌰 舉個例子：

I‘ll have an omelette with fries on the side, please.

我要一份煎蛋卷，配薯條(tiáo)作爲(wèi)配菜。

 

② 分開盛放
把醬料、黃油等配菜單獨裝在另一個盤子裏，不直接淋在主菜上。适合想控制用量，或喜歡自己調配口味的人。

 

🌰 舉個例子：

I’d like a salad with the dressing on the side, please.

我要一份沙拉，沙拉醬(jiàng)請分開(kāi)盛放。

 

這裏順便提個相關表達：餐館裏的“配菜、附加菜”，統一叫“side order”或“side dish”，下次想單獨點份小菜，用這兩個詞就沒錯～

“on the side”還(hái)有這(zhè)些意思！

 

雖然點(diǎn)餐用法很常見，但 on the side 這個短語還有其他重要含義，開頭C姐也大緻說瞭(le)一下，現在仔細說說~

 

① 兼職

指在主業之外額(é)外做的工作，通常是爲瞭(le)多賺錢

 

 

🌰 舉個例子：

He makes a little money on the side by cleaning windows in his spare time.

他靠業餘時間(jiān)兼職清洗窗戶(hù)賺些零用錢。

 

 

② 秘密地
指暗中進行的、不爲人知的行爲。

 

 

🌰 舉個例子：

I think he has another woman on the side.

我認爲他還有别的女人
。

 

side 這個詞(cí)，在口語中也特别好用，咱們接著(zhe)往下看~

“side”相關(guān)的實用表達(dá)

 

在英語中，直接說某物“too expensive”（太貴(guì)）或“too big”（太大）有時會顯得過於(yú)生硬甚至有些冒犯。

 

這時，C姐就要推薦給大家一個更委婉的表達：on the + 形容詞 + side

 

它能巧妙地表達出一種 “傾向於某種特質” 的感覺，意味著“稍微有點過於……”、“略偏……”，爲你的評價留下瞭餘地~

 

🌰 舉個例子：

On the expensive side (偏貴)

On the cheap side (偏便宜，常暗指質量一般)

On the large/big side (偏大)

On the small side (偏小)

On the cautious side (偏謹慎)

On the quiet side (偏安靜)

 

 

 

記幾個常用的就能直接用：

 

① look on the bright side

看到光明的一面、往好處想。遇到不順心的事，用這句話安慰别人或自我調節都很合适
。

 

🌰 舉個例子：

Look on the bright side - no one was badly hurt.

往好處想，至少沒人受重傷。

 

② (just) to be on the safe side

謹慎起見、以防萬一。“just”可以省略，做決策時想留個後手，就用它。

 

🌰 舉個例子：

I'm sure it won't rain, but I'll take an umbrella to be on the safe side.

我知道不會下雨，但爲瞭以防萬一，我還是帶把傘。

 

③get out of bed on the wrong side

表示：心情不好，看什麽都不順眼。形容一個人從一早就情緒不佳，像帶著“起床氣”過瞭一天，也是非常生動形象瞭。

 

🌰 舉個例子：

She must have got out of bed on the wrong side this morning - she's been snapping at everyone.

她今早肯定心情不好，對誰都沒好氣。
