從困境中脫身
Hook 是鈎子的意思,off the hook 脫鈎,其實就是脫身,或是擺(bǎi)脫責任的意思。不難想象,off the hook這個習慣用語是從釣魚來的,最早的時候是指一條本來已經咬鈎的魚又脫瞭(le)鈎,重獲自由,後來到十九世紀中葉,才引伸爲擺(bǎi)脫困境和擺(bǎi)脫責任。
I wasn't prepared to let her off the hook that easily.
我不準備(bèi)讓她那麽(me)輕易脫身的。
Thanks for getting me off the hook. I didn't want to attend that meeting.
謝謝你幫(bāng)我脫身,我本來不想參(cān)加那個會議的。
I couldn't get myself off the hook no matter what I tried.
不論(lùn)如何我都沒辦(bàn)法讓我自己脫身。

取消瞭(le),所以我可以脫(tuō)身瞭(le)。
